Man Accused Of Destroying Ten Commandments Monument Faces Multiple Charges

Editor's Note: A press release sent out by the Oklahoma Highway Patrol Monday morning stated that formal charges have been filed against Michael Reed. However, the District Attorney's Office confirmed with News 9 that formal charges have not yet been filed. Reed is being held at the Oklahoma County Jail on multiple complaints. 

A man accused of running over the Ten Commandments monument at the Oklahoma State Capitol with his car is being held at the Oklahoma County Jail on multiple charges.

According to the Oklahoma Highway Patrol, at about 7 p.m. Thursday, troopers received a report that someone had driven their vehicle into the Ten Commandments monument at the State Capitol. The driver reportedly abandoned the car and fled the scene.

According to an agent with the Secret Service in Oklahoma City, 29-year-old Michael Tate Reed was detained Friday morning by the Federal Protective Service due to threats he made against the President. During the interview, Reed said “voices in his head” and “Satan” told him to urinate on the monument, and to "smash it." 

Reed was then turned over to the Secret Service in Oklahoma City. He admitted he has been diagnosed with Bipolar and he was off his medication. He also said he was a Satanist.

Reed was taken to an Oklahoma County mental facility for an emergency order of detention and mental evaluation after the incident. Over the weekend, he was booked into the Oklahoma County Jail.

According to the District Attorney's Office, Reed is being held on multiple charges, including a felony count of destruction of state property/improvements, a felony count of indecent exposure, a misdemeanor count of making threatening statements, reckless driving, and operating a vehicle with a revoked license.

Reed also faces four counts of felony assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, which stemmed from incidents that occurred during his initial emergency order of detention on Friday, according to the OHP.

"This incident has the full attention of my office. We take this matter very seriously and are reviewing exactly what took place and areas we can improve. Our goal is public safety, any modifications to our security procedures we make in the future will be in pursuit of that goal", said Chief of Patrol Colonel, Ricky Adams.
