Two people are charged with making methamphetamine at a popular state park. A heads-up park ranger made the discovery at Sequoyah State Park on Fort Gibson Lake.

Sequoyah State Park is a popular place for thousands of people in our area, but the primitive camping area is somewhat secluded and overgrown, the perfect combination for people who don't want to be discovered.

At the Chickasaw camping area at Sequoyah State Park, a park ranger on patrol noticed a suspicious car near the lake.

He discovered shake and bake meth labs in the vehicle.

Reporter: “Does it alarm you in law enforcement, that meth makers would go to a place where the public has lots of access.”

Cherokoee Co Undersheriff Jason Chennault: “Yeah, it's alarming they would go to a place where a lot of families go."

Richard Quick from Tulsa and Sarah Martin from Broken Arrow were arrested on complaints of manufacturing meth.

"They both laid the meth labs off on each other; neither one would admit to being the cook," he said.

Evidence collected by investigators was enough for two mobile shake-and-bake labs.

Cherokee County's undersheriff says it could have been a potentially dangerous situation if a park visitor came across any ingredients tossed aside, or if they discovered meth making underway.

"These people aren't thinking right,” he said. “They're dangerous. They're hyped up. If they thought someone posed a security problem to them, there's no telling what they could do."

The sheriff's office will initiate proceedings to seize the vehicle. The discovery in a state park shows meth cooks are willing to mix up the potentially dangerous ingredients just about anywhere.

"Somewhere secluded off the beaten path, where a lot of traffic is not going to pass them, where they can hide from law enforcement,” Chennault said. “In this case, they didn't do a very good job of it."

Investigators encourage park visitors, no matter the time of year, to report anything that seems out of the ordinary or suspicious.
