This year's Halloweens was one of the coldest we've had in a while, but there were still many children out trick-or-treating and braving the cold temperature.

Rolling Oaks neighborhood in Berryhill is a major spot for kids and families to come and trick-or-treat, and it has been for years, but this year trick-or-treaters had to fight the cold for candy.

Fire and hot chocolate were two ways trick-or-treaters in the Halloween mecca were staying warm Friday night.

"This is the coldest Halloween I've ever been to," said trick-or-treater, Erin Woodward.

In fact, it's one of the coldest Halloweens in years, with a freeze warning overnight.

The cold temperature prompted a local church to hand out more than just candy.

"Provide a warm spot that they can sit down and warm their hands if they want to and enjoy hot chocolate," said Pastor Steve Yowell.

Yowell, with the View Acres Baptist Church, has been coming to Rolling Oaks to hand out treats for a few years now. He said this year's weather caused a last-minute change of plans.

"We almost did bottled water and, you know, a little ice water, but luckily, you know, this is the time of year when you normally think hot chocolate and cool weather, so I'm kind of glad it cooled off just a little bit to make the hot chocolate taste a lot better when they pick it up," Yowell said.

Some parents even hit the streets a little earlier than usual.

"Because it's going to get real cold tonight, and I figure get a head start on trick-or-treating so that way the kids ain't out in the cold. They get cold real easy during the night time," parent Johnathan Pittman said.

Many of the trick-or-treaters said Halloween comes just once a year and they would brave the cold.

“Yes I wanted to show off my costume, my sister bought it for me,” Woodward said.

She said that if it got too cold she would take her mom's sweatshirt to keep warm, or go home.

News On 6 Meteorologist, Dick Faurot, said the last time we were this cold was 2006 and the last time we had a Halloween colder than this was 2002.

It was definitely the coldest Halloween so far for many of the trick-or-treaters out Friday night.
