Tulsa firefighters found heavy flames coming from an apartment at the Silver Creek complex, 41st Street and Highway 169, early Saturday morning. It's believed the fire was started by someone smoking on the balcony, authorities say.

A district chief at the scene told News On 6 four men were in the apartment when the fire started shortly before 5 a.m. A smoke detector woke them, and they all escaped unharmed.

Fire companies were able to get the fire out pretty quickly though they had to pull down parts of the ceiling to reach the flames.

The chief said although investigators will officially determine the cause, there is good evidence that it was sparked by smoking materials left out on the balcony.

Firefighters were aided by calm winds, and the fire did not spread to other apartments, he said.
