Celebrating adoption was the goal at Victory Christian Center on Sunday.

The “Victory For Orphans” outreach program has only been around for one year, and its purpose is to spread the word about how many children need loving homes here and abroad.

“When you go in there with open arms and they run and jump into your arms and they're giggling and they're laughing; there's no greater feeling in the whole world,” missions director Jason Nussbum said.

Nussbum knows the feeling first hand, and now he is trying to get more of the community involved.

“To hold a kid in your arms, being able to sit and talk with the kid who maybe doesn't have any parents, anyone to love on them, and you can just see how much they're starving for it,” Nussbum said.

Mikael is a 12-year-old from Ethiopia. Five years ago, Melissa Marion and her husband adopted him and added to their family of three.

“When he was 6 and a half years old, he didn't know any English, and we didn't know his language. So when he came here it was an adventure,” Marion said.

Mikael's dad also was in foster care and adopted by a loving family after high school. He is now paying it forward.

Victory Christian celebrated families like the Marions and invited folks from across the community to share stories and information on how they can become involved.

“I remember seeing some of them and, you just, I know that they're not all gonna get adopted, and it breaks your heart because they don't have a mom and a dad,” Marion said. “They don't have anybody to tuck them in at night, to be sure that they're gonna be taken care of.”

But there are many children like Mikael that are being taken care of, thanks to the generosity of so many.

“Now you wouldn't even know that he wasn't a part of my family, and I mean, he actually looks a lot like my husband and his English is perfect,” she said. “He acts and looks like other kids. He plays football. He plays basketball. He's doing really well in school.”
