A Tulsa woman is in custody after police say she threw a car bumper on her seven-month-old child after she crashed into a light pole.

Police said they responded to a crash with possible injuries in the 4900 block of East Highway 11 around 2:35 Monday evening.

They said when they arrived they didn't find any vehicles but did see a downed light pole.

According to reports, while officers were searching the area, Tulsa Fire Engine 16 informed police they had found the vehicle involved in the accident.

When officers arrived, the firefighters told them they saw a vehicle swerving in the westbound lanes of Highway 11 and made contact with the driver when she eventually pulled over.

One of the firefighters said they helped the driver, Beverly Smith, out of the car and saw a small child screaming from the backseat. He said the child was in a car seat with the vehicle's bumper on top of him.

The firefighters said they removed the bumper along with other pieces of the vehicle before removing the child from the car seat. They said the seven-month-old had a fresh cut and bruising.

Police said when they spoke with Smith she said she turned around to see why the baby was crying then accidentally ran off the road and hit the light pole.

According to reports, Smith told officers she then got out of the vehicle, threw the bumper and other pieces from the car in the backseat and drove away.

Smith told the paramedic on scene she is prescribed Xanax and Hydrocodone for her back and said she took her medicine early Monday morning, the report says.

Officers said they performed a drug evaluation on Smith and determined she was under the influence and could not operate a vehicle safety.

According to jail records, Smith is being held on complaints of child endangerment and DUI first offense. Records show she is being held on a $26,000 bond.
