TULSA, Oklahoma -

Construction crews are tearing up a busy intersection near 101st and Delaware in south Tulsa. Work started Monday just south of the Creek Turnpike ramps.

The city will do the work in two phases.

Crews are working to upgrade the intersection where Riverside turns into Delaware with a traffic light and new concrete.

It's going to be down to one lane in each direction during construction.

The project is paid for by the 2008 Fix Our Streets bond issue. City engineers said the project will cost nearly $2 million dollars.

Engineers said the intersection is congested during peak travel times and this work should help ease that congestion and improve it for both drivers and walkers.

"We're adding shoulders and we're adding sidewalk and just fixing that intersection with signals and making it fully functional going through there,” said Field Engineering Manager, Terry Ball.

The intersection will be limited to one lane in each direction for the next three months.

Phase two of construction in the area will start next summer.
