Oklahomans Hit End-Of-Year Sales At Auto Dealers

Oklahomans looking to buy new cars are taking advantage of some big end-of-the-year discounts.

And with gas prices below $2 dollars per gallon, some dealers say they're seeing more trucks and sport utility vehicles rolling off the lot.

Several of the families out shopping on Friday were looking for SUVs. They say they're looking forward to saving a little money on their purchase, and on gas.

Brenna Otto knows exactly what she's after on this car lot.

"I had a Camaro, something with more room, hopefully kids someday,” shopper Brenna Otto said.

And while she's thought about getting a mid-sized SUV for a while, the big drops at the pump persuaded her to take the plunge.

"I even looked at bigger SUV because if the gas is cheaper it's not nearly as bad,” Otto said.

“We've definitely seen an upswing in sales of trucks and SUVs,” Jim Glover Chevrolet VP Jared Glover said. “There's a big difference in filling up a truck for $50 or $100, and I think people are taking that into account.”

Glover estimates truck and SUV sales are 10 to 15 percent higher at JGC so far this December compared to the same time last year.

He said while prices at the pump may be fueling the increase, so are the end-of-the-year deals across the auto industry.

"Right at the end of the year, pushing for a big close, from a manufacturer standpoint, wanting to get their numbers up at the end of the year,” he said. “From a dealer standpoint, we set goals every year."

You can find rebates, some as high as 20 percent of a vehicle's price. And there's special financing if you have good credit. But even if your credit isn't great, Glover said rebates could help get you better interest rates from lenders.

"They like that, because they're loaning less money on a more expensive car because the rebate is so big,” Glover said.

Even when gas prices to start to creep back up, Glover said improved mileage on vehicles, including trucks and SUVs, will help lighten the financial burden.

"They've come a long way from really even two years ago,” he said.

Another thing you can do to keep the most out of your gas tank is put nitrogen in your tires. That's what this little green valve stem cap means. Nitrogen keeps your tires inflated properly longer, giving you better gas mileage.

Some families said that while the price decreases are welcome, trucks and SUVs are a necessity.

"We've got grandchildren stuff, grandchildren, debris, and all the things that need to go in an SUV,” shopper Bill Wilkinson said.

And he said, the convenience of the extra space is priceless.

Glover said when you're trying to get a good deal on a new car, don't forget to think about the warranty and free maintenance because those things can save a lot of money down the road.
