An Okfuskee County family says someone broke into their home, ransacked it, and made off with all sorts of valuables, including something irreplaceable.

Doug Wayland said the theft occurred sometime Christmas Eve or Christmas. He said the thieves took guns, jewelry, coins, and a wooden urn.

Inside that urn, which was in a gun cabinet, were Doug's father Dean's cremated remains.

Dean Wayland was a former Assistant Creek County District Attorney who died in 2008. He was also a local businessman, who served as a Marine Lieutenant in the bloody “Tet Offensive” during the Vietnam War in 1968.

“My faith in mankind is trying to tell me they didn't know what it was. The kind of person who would steal something like that on purpose is bad karma for sure,” Doug Wayland said Wednesday.

The Okfuskee Sheriff's Office is investigating.

Doug Wayland's sister hopes they find who's responsible. “Just the thought of his ashes being discarded in a dumpster somewhere or in a pasture just discarded like he was nothing is just disgraceful,” she said.
