A 3-year-old boy is dead and Sapulpa Police said his mother's boyfriend is to blame.

Officers first arrested Christopher Whinery for child abuse, but he's now facing a first degree murder charge.

Detectives said 3-year-old Jason White died early Thursday morning at St. Francis Hospital from blunt force trauma to the head, as well as the child being shaken.

Jason's grandfather, Todd White, spent his last moments with him and wishes more than anything he go back and save his grandson's life.

Jason loved playing with toys and Tonka trucks, but especially loved spending time with his grandfather.

"It's hurts, so very much," Todd said with tears in his eyes.

His grandson Jason used to ride around with him in an old blue Chevy pickup truck.

"It's terrible. You watch him there, all the tubes and wires, I talked to him, I sang to him and promised him I'll take care of his brother and sister," Todd said.

This is Todd's second devastating loss in less than two years. His son, Jason's father, died a year in a half ago from a rare blood disease.

Not long after, Jason's mom got involved with Whinery.

"We can now think back and see little things that were signs, but few times he tried to tell us he didn't want to go back home and we didn't know why,” Todd said.

Tuesday, Sapulpa Police were called to the home after Whinery called 911. He told police Jason had been jumping on the bed, fell, and hit his head.

A few hours after Jason arrived at the hospital the staff contacted Sapulpa Police and said the story didn't add up.

“The injuries were not consistent with the story given by the boyfriend and the mother," Major Mike Reed said.

Not long after Whinery was arrested and the other two children in the home, ages 2 and 5, were taken into DHS custody.

Jason died Thursday morning.

"Listen to your children, listen to the children. Love them, hug them, don't be harsh, be understanding because you might never see them again," Todd White said.

Jason would have been four next week.

His brother and sister will be reunited with their grandfather who will seek full custody of his grandkids.

Jason's mom is not facing any charges, but police said this is an ongoing investigation.
