According to a news release, the board counts the state's official voter registration statistics every year on January 15. This year's count showed 2,030,277 registered voters. Republicans accounted for 43.6 percent of them while Democrats made up 43.5 percent. Independents were 12.9 percent.

The election board says nine voters are registered as Americans Elect, a group that qualified as a political party in 2012 but lost its party status after failing to field a candidate in the 2012 presidential election.

The numbers confirm what the election board reported after the November election.

The State Election Board began recording statewide voter registration statistics by party in 1960.

Here's how the election board breaks down the numbers:

Democrats: 882,686     43.5%

Republicans: 886,153    43.6%

Americans Elect: 9 N/A

Independents: 261,429:     12.9%

Total voters: 2,030,277

The election board says registration for other recognized parties or political organization was less than 0.0001%.
