Troopers say speeding played a role in a single-car crash that killed a Broken Arrow teenager on 111th Street near 209th East Avenue in Wagoner County. It happened Monday at about 3 p.m.

A Monte Carlo was eastbound on 111th Street when the driver lost control after topping a hill driving "very fast," according to the investigating trooper.

"Seems like they ran off the right side of the road, over-corrected, hit an embankment on the left side of the road a couple of different times," said OHP Lt. Chris Arnall.

A back seat passenger, identified as 19-year-old Tyler Avard of Broken Arrow, was killed. The other two occupants of the car were transported to a Tulsa hospital in unknown condition.

OHP did not release the names of the female driver or second male passenger because both are 17.

Avard was wearing a seat belt, but it wasn't enough to save him, the trooper said.

"Unfortunately there are some crashes that are just so horrendous, it's not going to make a difference whether you've got it on or not," Arnall said.

The lieutenant said the population has really grown in the west part of Wagoner County and they are seeing more wrecks on the rural roads.

He said the speed limit on those roads is 45 mph and if you leave the road, there are plenty of things to hit.

"There's just no room for error," he said.

The Coweta Fire Department responded to the wreck.
