TU head football coach Philip Montgomery announced Tuesday that he has hired Houston Baptist Coach Aaron Fletcher to coach cornerbacks at Tulsa. TU's hiring of Fletcher finalized its full-time coaching staff.

“He's a really good technical corners coach. He does a great job of teaching players the proper and sound ways of doing things,” said Montgomery.

Fletcher, 37, served as an assistant coach, mainly working with cornerbacks and nickel backs while he was at Houston Baptist University (2014 season).

Before coaching at the collegiate level, he served as assistant head football coach and defensive coordinator at David W. Carter High School in Dallas, after serving a short stint as a secondary coach at DeSoto High School. Prior to that, he was the secondary coach at Lancaster High School from 2006-2011, and was also the assistant track and field coach from 2006-2009. Fletcher first began his coaching career as an assistant at Lyndon B. Johnson High School in Austin.

“When I have recruited players from the Dallas-area schools where Aaron coached, I had the opportunity to see how he interacted with players and how he taught. He's a really good technical corners coach. He does a great job of teaching players the proper and sound ways of doing things,” Montgomery stated.

In 1997, Fletcher played one season for the Lions. He later joined the Minor Football League, playing for the Austin Rattlers (2000-2001), and participated in an NFL Pre-Draft Camp. He then went on to the National Indoor Football League, playing for the Austin Knights (2001).

Fletcher later earned a degree in health education from Texas A&M-Commerce in 2003. In 2004, he played in the Arena Football League for the Laredo Law Football Club.

Fletcher has been an active member in his community; he founded a production company in East Austin called 3 and Out Productions to enhance community and student relationships through sports camps and clinics.

He is also involved with the Boys and Girls Club, and has previously worked several football camps, served as youth minister, and was an active member of The Potter's House in Dallas.

Fletcher and his wife Tanzania have three children, (two daughters and a son): Anaiya, Taylor, and Aaron Jr.

“We're excited to have Aaron and his family join our Tulsa family,” Montgomery said.

Two quality control coaching positions still have to be filled, but Tulsa is almost done rebuilding its staff.
