SAPULPA, Oklahoma - Two adults and three children got out of the house safely after the garage caught on fire overnight.

The Sapulpa Fire Department got the call about the fire at West 64th Place and West 61st Street at about 2:30 a.m.

Fire battalion chief Steve Fleck says the fire spread from the garage into the home's attic and roof. He credits smoke detectors with allowing the family to get out without being injured.

It's among a father's worst nightmares, watching your home burn - knowing your three kids and their mother are inside.

That was Chad Henson's reality. He said he was across the street when he saw smoke at his house.

There were a total of six people and several pets in the home when they all heard the high-pitched beeps of smoke detectors.

Firefighters are still investigating the cause but believe a space heater used to keep some puppies warm in the garage may be to blame.

Then Hensons said they had the space heater in there to keep some pets warm. Some pets made it - others they think were likely killed.

One pet they thought was gone turned up. Whiskers the cat - a little worse for wear and tear - had apparently hid and survived the fire.

The Red Cross is helping the family deal with the situation.

One of the home's residents is an employee at Sloppy Dog Wash at 4316 South Peoria. Sloppy Dog Wash has started a fund to financially help the family. Donations may be dropped off at their South Peoria location or their Broken Arrow location at 101st and Elm.
