Big 12 Baseball Sliding Into Tulsa's ONEOK Field
TULSA, Oklahoma - Big 12 college baseball is coming to Tulsa. The conference chose ONEOK Field to host its championship tournament this season.
The Bermuda grass at ONEOK Field is almost ready for Drillers opening day and, behind the scenes, crews are bringing the stadium out of hibernation.
The Drillers play their first weekend series against San Antonio in about a month, but now baseball fans will have another weekend to look forward to.
ONEOK Field hit a home run by attracting the Big 12 Conference baseball championship this year.
Driller's President Mike Melega said his staff is rolling out the red carpet for the 60,000 fans and eight college teams set to descend on Tulsa's Brady Arts District.
"We're going to put on our A game because this is not only important for 2015, but the Big 12 Championship, this is an opportunity for us to earn the right to host this thing down the road," he said.
Oklahoma City hosted the championship last year, now it's Tulsa's turn.
"It's a huge event for us and it's a great opportunity to really let Tulsa shine and to let ONEOK Field shine," Melega said.
The tournament is expected to bring more than $5.5 million to the local economy.
"The neighborhood is blowing up around us; when we're at games now we're watching guys walking their dog and going for a jog. The first year when you came here you didn't see that, so things are changing around us for the positive and every sense of the word," Melega said.
Tickets go on sale March 15th and the games start in late May.
