A 14-year-old boy is in critical condition after he was shot while his 17-year-old uncle was demonstrating how to disassemble a pistol, Tulsa police said.

Police and emergency responders were called to East Admiral Place and South 119th East Avenue at about 3:15 p.m. on Saturday.

"Unfortunately he didn't unload the handgun before the demonstration, [and] it discharged," TPD Sgt. James Peters said.

There was another 14-year-old boy present at the time of the shooting, police said.

The family has taken all firearms out of the home and three have been turned over to police.

"The father has asked that we take all the firearms from the home and store them in the property room," Peters said.

Peters believes the shooting could've been prevented if the teens had been supervised by an adult.

The 17-year-old has been released into the custody of his father, and the boy who was shot is undergoing surgery.

TPD is treating the shooting as an accident.
