NSU Sorority Members Wake Up To Vandalized Vehicles

Posted: Updated:
TAHLEQUAH, Oklahoma - Vandals have lashed out at Northeastern State University students, targeting cars belonging to sorority members.

Investigators in Tahlequah are trying to determine if the damage is backlash at the Greek community because of the video made public of University of Oklahoma fraternity members chanting racist lyrics to the tune of a nursery rhyme while on a bus with their sorority dates.

All of the cars reported vandalized at NSU were parked in a lot in front of the Loeser housing complex -- the dorm that houses all three sororities on campus.

"My first reaction was, ‘Oh my gosh, somebody hates me,'” Alexis Murray said.

Murray, a NSU sophomore and sorority member, was on her way to a meeting Wednesday morning when she noticed something was wrong.

But it wasn't just her car. At least 10 other vehicles in the same lot are damaged.

The common factor? Each car has Greek letters displayed.

Profanity is scratched into the paint and the Greek decals are ripped.

Students still are trying to wrap their heads around -- why?

“It could be people not getting a bid and being upset about that,” Murray said. “It could be what happened at OU, it could be a lot of things."

NSU Vice President of Student Affairs Dr. Laura Boren says the school is increasing security.

“Our university police department is ramping up their patrol in the residential parking area, and our housing staff are increasing the number of rounds with our residential students."

Students said damages range from $200 to $1000.

But Murray said she's not mad, and she doesn't want whoever did this to be given any serious consequences.

She says all she really wants is an apology and to find out -- why.

“I want them to maybe come talk to us and I want to find out why they did it,” Murray said. “I kind of want to hear the why and, you know, was it something we did? And maybe just have that conversation.”
