Oral Roberts Splits DH with NDSU: Wins Game One 6-0, Loses Game Two 4-3

The Oral Roberts baseball team had three home runs all season entering the weekend and hit two in the first game against North Dakota State as the Golden Eagles split a Saturday doubleheader against the Bison, winning game one 6-0 before dropping the nightcap 4-3.

In the first two games of Summit League Play, Rolando Martinez and Matt Whatley each tallied four hits, while Whatley (3) and Chase Stafford (2) accounted for five of ORU's nine runs on Saturday.

Guillermo Trujillo (2-2) was nearly untouchable on the mound in the first game of the doubleheader as the ORU starter got the win after pitching seven scoreless innings, giving up two hits and striking out eight. Kurt Giller (2-3) got the start in the second game, taking the loss after getting tagged with four runs on six hits in 4.2 innings. Only one of the Bison runs was earned.

For the Bison, Ben Peterson led the way offensively with three hits on the day, two coming in the second game. Brayden Resch's home run gave him a team-best two RBI. On the mound, David Ernst (1-4) took the loss in the first game after giving up six runs on 10 hits in 5.2 innings. Brian VanderWoude (1-1) got the victory in game two after coming into the game in relief of starter Parker Trewin.

Turning Point

After dominating game one and grabbing a 3-0 lead in game two, ORU gave up a four-run fifth inning, including a Bison home run by Brayden Resch. Despite loading the bases in the bottom of the eighth, ORU could not regain the lead.

Individual Leaders

Oral Roberts: ORU got four hits each by Rolando Martinez and Matt Whatley. Whatley led the way with three runs scored and had two RBI, as did Chase Stafford and Anthony Sequeira. Trujillo finished game one with eight strikeouts, the most by a Golden Eagle pitcher in a game this season.

North Dakota State: Ben Peterson had a team high three hits on the day. Brayden Resch led the way with a pair of RBI on a two-run home run to give the Bison the lead in the second game.

Inside the Box Score

- After a groundout to start the game, Guillermo Trujillo struck out the next five batters in a row.

- Trujillo finished the game with eight strikeouts, one off his career high.

- Matt Whatley had a banner day at the plate in game one, going 3-4 with an RBI and three runs scored. It was a season high in both hits and runs scored for Whatley.

- Anthony Sequeira, Audie Afenir and Rolando Martinez each had a pair of hits in the first game, with Sequeira recording two RBI.

- ORU had 13 hits in game one, the third most in a game this year. It is the third time in the last four games in which ORU has had at least 10 hits.

- NDSU had just three hits in the first game of the double header, matching the fewest hits given up in a game this year.

- In game two, the Bison out-hit ORU 10-7.

- ORU left a combined 21 runners on base, including 11 in the second game.

- After ORU had a pair of homeruns in the first game, the Bison hit two out of the park in game two.

Game 1 Scoring Summary

- Matt Whatley started the scoring in the bottom of the first inning as he led off with a solo homerun, his first of the season, to put the Golden Eagles up 1-0.

- ORU finally got some breathing room in the fifth inning. Whatley led off the inning with a single and came around to score on a two-out blast over the center fielder's head from Sequeira. The two out rally continued as Audie Afenir poked one into left center to score Sequeira and put the Golden Eagles up 3-0.

- Chase Stafford went opposite field in the bottom of the sixth inning, hitting the second pitch of his at-bat into the ORU bullpen to give ORU a 4-0 lead. It was Stafford's first home run of his ORU career.

- ORU continued the scoring in the sixth thanks to an error on the NDSU center fielder that allowed Whatley to score. Sequiera finished the scoring with a double down the right field line to plate Brandy and make it 6-0.

Game 2 Scoring Summary

- The Golden Eagles loaded the bases in the second inning, scoring the game's first run on a sacrifice fly by Stafford to score Sequeira.

- Aggressive base running helped ORU extend the lead in the fourth inning. After a successful hit-and-run put runners on first and third, a stolen base by Stafford caused a passed ball, allowing Derrian James to score and sending Stafford to third.

- Nick Roark scored Stafford to put ORU up 3-0 with an RBI single to the shortstop.

- NDSU got its first run of the series in the fifth inning of game two off the bat of Juan Gamez, who led off the inning with a solo home run.

- The Bison got within one with an RBI single to second base from Paul Funk to score Drew Fearing, who reached third on an ORU error.

- NDSU took a 4-3 lead with its third and fourth runs in the inning off a line drive home run to right field.

ORU and North Dakota State will play the series finale starting at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
