Oklahoma State recorded its fourth shutout of the season and completed a three-game series sweep of Grand Canyon with an 8-0 win Sunday afternoon at Allie P. Reynolds Stadium.

The series sweep capped a 5-0 week for the 23rd-ranked Cowboys, who improved to 13-6 on the season.

“We're moving in the right direction. We still have a long way to go, but the kids can only win the challenge that's in front of them and they did that this week,” said OSU head coach Josh Holliday.

Michael Freeman picked up his team-high third win of the season as the senior southpaw tossed seven innings and allowed just five hits, all singles, while striking out four to move to 3-0. Garrett Williams and Remey Reed worked the final two frames to complete the shutout.

“Over the last five games, we've really had guys throw the ball great,” Holliday said. “Mike Freeman has been such a joy to watch. He works fast, he throws a ton of strikes, his fastball has so much sink on it that he creates a lot of ground balls. I'm really proud of Mike… our team has a real calm and confidence about it when he pitches because he's been so consistent.”

Freeman got plenty of run support from a Cowboy offense that recorded 12 hits and had six different players collect RBIs. Corey Hassel led the way with a 3-for-5 day at the plate, tying his career high in hits for the second consecutive day, while Jacob Chappell and Kevin Bradley each had two hits.

“To take a young man (GCU starter Andrew Naderer) that was a Cape Cod League All-Star last summer and pretty much have him on the ropes from start to finish and knock him out, then continue to add runs throughout the game, I was very proud of our offense,” Holliday said. “That's two-straight games that Corey Hassel has been a big part of sparking our team, and I'm really proud of Jacob Chappell, the way he's picked up his offense and this week had several key hits.”

The Cowboys plated their first run against Naderer in the third. Garrett McCain led off the inning and was hit by a pitch, and after stealing second, he advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by Gage Green. Following a groundout, Conor Costello delivered a clutch two-out RBI when he ripped a single off the glove of GCU third baseman Ben Mauseth.

OSU added multiple runs in each of its next two at bats.

In the fourth, the Cowboys rallied for three runs on three hits, with Chappell providing an RBI single and McCain also picking up an RBI.

With OSU leading 4-0, Dustin Williams added to that total in the fifth when he blasted a two-run home run over the wall in right field, his second round tripper of the season.

The Cowboys' final two runs came in their last two at bats, with Green collecting an RBI triple in the seventh and Bradley driving in a run with a double in the eighth.

OSU returns to midweek action Tuesday when its hosts Central Arkansas at Reynolds Stadium before the Cowboys open Big 12 Conference play Friday at TCU.
