CHICAGO, Illinois -

The fraternity under scrutiny because of a racist chant caught on video announced an extensive review of its chapters Wednesday.

Sigma Alpha Epsilon unveiled what it calls a "national plan to combat racial intolerance."

SAE national director Blaine Ayers apologized for the video and vowed to join a national dialogue about eradicating racism on college campuses.

"The words were offensive and harmful, and we now must begin the task of seeking forgiveness and taking steps to ensure this never happens again," said Blaine Ayers.

At a news conference in Chicago, the Illinois-based organization announced a new diversity training program and confidential hotline to promote inclusiveness within its membership.

"I can promise that just as we did with Oklahoma, if we learn of any discrimination or other unacceptable behavior currently going on, we will be swift in our response," Blaine Ayers said.

"We know that we have a responsibility to educate our members and we are committed to helping to develop these young men into men of great character."

The fraternity was responding to a video that surfaced at the University of Oklahoma in Norman this month showing OU fraternity members engaging in a racist chant.

SAE disbanded the local chapter and OU has expelled two students and banned Sigma Alpha Epsilon from the campus.
