Sand Springs Public Schools and Tulsa Public Schools have canceled classes for Thursday due to power outages in the aftermath of a tornado that swept across the area.

Officials said 10 TPS campuses were without power late Wednesday night.

In Sand Springs, one person was killed at a mobile home park, and authorities still are counting the number of homes damaged. There were 50 mobile homes destroyed in one park alone.

SSPS Superintendent Lloyd Snow made the call to cancel classes after the widespread damage and downed power lines.

According to the Sand Springs Leader, students have planned to meet at the high school at 9 a.m. to help people in community who have lost their homes.

By 10 p.m., there still were 31,000 customers without power in Tulsa County.

Tulsa Public Schools Superintendent Keith Ballard released a statement to explain his decision:

"After assessing the condition of our schools in light of tonight's storms, we have made the decision to close schools tomorrow due to safety concerns," TPS superintendent Keith Ballard said. "As of 11 p.m. tonight, we have ten schools without power -- two high schools, one middle school and seven elementary schools. We have a couple of properties with downed trees, and I am concerned about downed power lines and the uncertain condition of streets in some parts of town. It is in the best interest of our students and their safety that we make the difficult decision to close school tomorrow. We will provide further updates tomorrow."
