The Oral Roberts baseball team kicked off a three-game series against Omaha on Friday night. The Golden Eagles capitalized in the fourth inning, scoring two runs to win game one.

Scoring Synopsis

1st Inning

After allowing a base hit single, ORU pitcher Guillermo Trujillo picked off a runner to send his team to the plate.

Matt Brandy set the tone when he smashed an off-wall two-out double for the Golden Eagles. Up next, Anthony Sequeira drew a walk. With runners now on first and second, Audie Afenir stepped in the batter's box carrying a .357 batting average, the highest on the team, with 30 hits, nine doubles and 14 runs batted in on the season. The situation looked good for Oral Roberts, but didn't pan out when the big hitter struck out.

2nd Inning

ORU got a quick three up three down at the top of two, before taking the plate again in the scoreless game.

ORU's at bat was similar to Omaha's, as the team quickly went down. The score remained 0-0 going into three.

3rd Inning

So far, each team only posted one base hit.

The Mavericks started three with its seven hole, Cole Patterson. Patterson made out number one, after an infield grounder on a 3-2 count. Tim Schaareman recorded Omaha's second hit with a liner down the right field line. Up next, Collin Leif moved Schaaremen with a sacrifice bunt out in front of home plate. With two outs and a runner on second, Alex Schultz popped up making out number three for the Mavericks.

The Golden Eagles didn't have much luck at the bottom of the inning, returning to the field still scoreless at the top of four.

4th Inning

Oral Roberts stayed hot in the field, giving up nothing at the top of the inning. With two outs, Justin Threlkeld attempted to bunt for a base hit but a great defensive play from Trujillo ended the Mavericks at bat.

ORU's first two batters got on base, before throwing errors moved Sequeira to third. With runners on the corners and no outs, Sequeira scored on a fielder's choice. Following that, a bloop single from Dean Wilson scored Derrian James. A grounder ended the inning, but the Golden Eagles controlled the game with a 2-0 advantage.

5th Inning

For the first time in the game, ORU took the field with a lead. An outfield catch by Wilson, followed by a pair of outs by Trujillo, sent ORU back to the plate.

Matt Whatley picked up a four-pitch walk to lead ORU. A double-play by Omaha cleared the bases. With two outs, Brandy got a base hit to extend the inning, but a ground-out from Sequeira sent the Golden Eagles back to the field.

6th Inning

After a few hits from Omaha, Oral Roberts managed three outs without allowing a score.

ORU took the plate, but was sent back to the field after a pair of ground outs to the pitcher and second base, followed by a hit and a ground-out to third.

The Final Innings

The seventh and eighth innings were much like the sixth. The Golden Eagles then proceeded to maintain its 2-0 lead into the ninth, finishing with a victory in game one of the series.

Up Next

ORU will continue the three-game series with game two on Saturday at 2:00 p.m., and wrap with game three on Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
