Volunteers Clean Up Tornado Debris At River City Park

After a deadly tornado blew through Sand Springs, the community is using the weekend to clean up.

More than 100 volunteers worked to get River City Park in Sand Springs up and running.

Some Little League baseball games in Sand Springs were put on hold today as volunteers went to work.

Around 150 volunteers came in from all over to pick up storm debris that blew onto the fields and trails at River City Park.

Everything from small limbs to large trees needed to be cut and hauled away.

A demolition contractor also is working at the park to get everything cleaned up. They should be there for the next couple of days.

Volunteers worked all over the park to make sure everything was cleaned up.

"It's actually great to see all these people come out here and help the community to get their ball fields back up and running," volunteer Logan Shepherd said.

"Our park is important to our community,” city manager Elizabeth Gray said. “It's a source of pride and it's where everybody comes to meet."

Some of these trees that came crashing down in the storm were 100 years old and had bald eagle nests. Some of those nests got blown away and seven eaglets died.

Conservation workers are trying to make sure the eagles have a new place to rest.

As for the ball park, the wind blew over backstops and the parks department doesn't know how soon it will be able to resume games. But the park is open for people to walk around and enjoy it.
