Dick Faurot's Weather Blog: Finally A Break, At Least For A Day Or Two

Posted: Updated:

Needless to say, the last several days have indeed been interesting. Severe weather for the western side of the state yesterday and on the eastern side today, but as you can see on the two day rainfall map, courtesy of the OK Mesonet, the rainfall has not been very widespread despite this rather active pattern.

Temperatures on the other hand have tied records, or been close to it, for the last several mornings for the warmest overnight lows. Yep, if it has seemed unusually warm and humid lately, those morning lows in the 60s to 70 for the last three nights are proof positive of that.

It has also been quite warm during the day for this time of year, as you can see on the max/min temperature map for today, also courtesy of the OK Mesonet.

That is now changing as a cool front has swept through the state bringing cooler, and more importantly, much drier air with it. Northerly winds all night along with clear skies will allow temperatures to drop into the lower 40s by Friday morning.

Sunny skies all day, along with a brisk NE wind, will keep temperatures for the most part in the 60s, topping out around 70. Despite the cooler conditions, the sunny skies and the higher sun angle at this time of year will also require some sunscreen protection if you will be outside for any length of time.

But, the sunny skies will not last long as the clouds will be returning on Saturday and little or no sunshine is expected for the rest of the weekend, nor well into the following week.

A series of disturbances aloft will be responsible for the clouds and also a slight chance of light showers late Saturday, better chances Sunday, and even better chances for Monday into the day Tuesday. Despite a return to southerly winds on Saturday and Sunday, the clouds and a few showers around will keep daytime temperatures generally in the lower 70s. Our overnight lows will be in the upper 40s to start the day Saturday and then warmer going into next week.

As mentioned, our best chance of rain looks to be on Monday, but some of the longer range guidance also keeps us rather wet through the day Tuesday. At any rate, the clouds and more widespread rainfall should also hold our daytime temperatures down, as you can see on the forecast page.

There will be at least a chance of rain right on through Wednesday before a much stronger cold front arrives to clear things off and bring another round of cooler conditions for the latter part of next week.

With this rather unsettled period ahead of us, the rainfall potential looks promising, even for the more western counties - which have largely missed out in recent weeks.

Notice the 7 day QPF map for example and you can see much of the state has the potential for an inch or more of rainfall which will be welcome indeed for our western neighbors if it verifies.

In the meantime, stay tuned and check back for updates.
