SPERRY, Oklahoma -

The town of Sperry was without water early Monday morning, forcing schools to close for the day. Sperry Public Schools  announced it will not hold classes Monday, April 13.

About half the town has water as of about 11:30 a.m., according to Sperry mayor Billy Butler.

Butler said the problem started when a meter failed on a water supply line from Tulsa. The city switched to an emergency line - which also failed.

Crews are working to find the problem and fix it. Butler said he doesn't have a time estimate for water to be restored.

Superintendent Brian Beagles said one of their employees who lives close to the school first notified them of the water outage. They quickly decided to close after speaking to city officials.

Some buses were already making their rounds but hadn't picked up any kids yet. About 1,200 students attend Sperry Public Schools, he said.

A notice has been posted on the school website.
