TU MBB Names Michael Schwartz As Assistant Coach

Posted: Updated:
TULSA, Oklahoma -

The University of Tulsa Head Basketball Coach Frank Haith announced Wednesday the addition of Michael Schwartz as an assistant coach for the Golden Hurricane basketball program.

Schwartz comes to Tulsa after four years at Fresno State, where he served as associate head coach last season. Prior to his time at Fresno State, he worked with Haith for six years at the University of Miami, including four as an assistant coach. Haith and Schwartz also worked together at the University of Texas from 2002-04. Schwartz fills the position vacated when former assistant coach Dave Leitao left to become the head coach at DePaul.

“Mike was very instrumental in our success at Miami. He's an outstanding coach and a great tactician. He's also a great friend, and we work well together,” Haith said. “We're welcoming not only a great coach, but a great family man, with his wife, Stephanie, and two beautiful daughters. Mike adds tremendous teaching, coaching and recruiting ability to our program. He is excellent with skill development, and will be tremendous with our players, and in particular our guards. I think we just hit a home run with Mike Schwartz.”

Schwartz served as lead assistant for each of his four years at Fresno State, before he was promoted to associate head coach in 2014. He was the Bulldogs' in-game coordinator, primarily responsible for game preparation, recruiting, scouting and skill development. He helped lead Fresno State to a 21-18 record in 2013-14, and an appearance in the finals of the College Basketball Invitational – the school's first 20-win season and postseason appearance in seven years.

“I am extremely fortunate to have the opportunity to be a part of The University of Tulsa, its community and the basketball program,” Schwartz said. “I have a long-standing relationship with Coach Haith, and I am thrilled to be a member of his staff and program. I am aware of the rich academic and athletic tradition at TU, and feel honored to be a part of it.”

Schwartz joined Miami in 2005 as coordinator of basketball operations. He was promoted to assistant coach in 2007, and helped lead the Hurricanes to an overall record of 83-52 and three postseason appearances in four years.

Schwartz was key in guiding Miami to one of the biggest single-season turnarounds in 2007-08 when they posted the second-most wins in program history (23), including a school-record 14 wins at home and a program-best fifth-place finish in the ACC. As Coordinator of Basketball Operations at Miami, Schwartz handled video operations, including film breakdown and opponent scouting, supervised recruiting mail outs and served as a liaison with the team's managerial staff.

Schwartz joined the Hurricanes staff in 2005 after one season as an assistant coach at the University of Texas at San Antonio. Before joining the staff at UT San Antonio, Schwartz served as the men's basketball video coordinator at the University of Texas for two seasons (2002-04). Schwartz played basketball at Texas in 1998-99 and was a member of the Longhorns' Big XII championship team.

Schwartz graduated from Texas in 1999 with a bachelor's degree in speech communication studies, and served as a graduate assistant at Texas from 1999 until 2001. He spent a year on the basketball staff at Long Beach State, before returning to Texas as video coordinator in 2002. He was part of the Longhorns' run to the NCAA Final Four in 2003 and the NCAA Sweet 16 in 2004. Schwartz also gained experience with USA Basketball as a support staff member for the 2001 Young Men's World Championship Trials, the 2000 USA National Select Team – coached by Mike Jarvis and Bob Huggins – and the 2000 USA Youth Development Festival.

A native of Los Angeles, Calif., Schwartz played collegiate basketball at Sonoma State University (1994-96) before finishing his career at the University of Texas. He and his wife, Stephanie, have two daughters, Sydney and Samantha.
