Oklahoma State notched the 2,500th win in program history Saturday as the 10th-ranked Cowboys claimed a 10-4 series opening victory over Baylor in front of 3,923 fans at Allie P. Reynolds Stadium.

The win snapped OSU's three-game losing skid and kept the Cowboys atop the Big 12 Conference standings as they improved to 25-12 overall and 9-4 in league play.

OSU also became just the 18th program in NCAA Division I baseball history to reach 2,500 wins, reaching the mark in its 104th season.

“It tells you the program has been strong for a number of years,” said OSU head coach Josh Holliday, who also played four seasons for the Cowboys. “All the people that have come here before that put their blood, sweat and tears in it and all of us now, we all care and want to continue to make this program stand strong, not only in history, but in the future.

“It's a great accomplishment for anyone that's ever been a part of it.”

Saturday's win over Baylor (14-23, 4-9) would mark OSU's 10th come-from-behind triumph of the season as the Bears took a 2-0 lead against Cowboy starter Jon Perrin after 3 1Ž2 innings.

But in the bottom of the fourth, OSU took advantage of a pair of BU errors to tie the game. David Petrino got things started with a two-out single, and Bryan Case reached on a throwing error by third baseman Jonathan Ducoff. Up next, Tim Arakawa delivered an RBI single, and Jon Littell would reach safely on another throwing error that also brought home the tying run.

“When opportunities are presented, you've got to take advantage of them,” Holliday said. “We got a couple of opportunities there, and our kids did a great job of cashing in on them. Once we did that, we picked up a little momentum and then were able to create some of our own breaks from that point forward.”

With the game tied 2-2, the Cowboys would take control over the next four innings, scoring at least once in each frame.

In the fifth, a sacrifice fly by Donnie Walton plated the go-ahead run before an RBI single by Petrino made it 4-2, and OSU would increase its lead in the sixth. In that inning, the Cowboys rallied for four runs on three hits, with Gage Green picking up an RBI on a squeeze bunt before Walton ripped a two-run home run just inside the right-field foul pole to put the home team up by an 8-2 margin.

OSU added a run in the seventh on a sac fly by Arakawa before its final score in the eighth compliments of a two-out RBI double by Corey Hassel.

“Our offense was pretty good innings four through eight — the kids put up a lot of good at-bats there with some clutch two-out hitting and a lot of skilled baseball played with some bunts, some hit-and-runs and stolen bases. It was a lot of kids playing well, a good team effort, great crowd, beautiful day — that's kind of how you draw it up.”

The offensive outburst and a strong defense that did not commit an error helped Perrin earn a win for the second-straight week as he improved to 4-3 by working 6 1/3 innings and allowing two runs on six hits.

“I struggled through the first few innings, and Coach (Rob) Walton kind of got into me a little bit and told me I wasn't really driving the ball the way I needed to,” Perrin said. “He said if you're gonna get beat, get beat throwing hard. Once I started doing that, the ball kind of got down in the zone, and I started making a little bit better pitches.”

OSU finished with 10 hits in the contest as eight different Cowboys had hits, including two apiece by Petrino and Arakawa.

The two teams return to action Sunday at 1 p.m. before closing out the series Monday in a game also scheduled for a 1 p.m. first pitch.
