DELAWARE COUNTY, Oklahoma -

An inmate who escaped from a Tulsa halfway house is back behind bars.

Steven Newby has been on the run since disappearing from the Avalon Center in downtown Tulsa on March 10, 2015.

The Delaware County Sheriff said deputies found Newby near the Oak Chapel community which is near the Oklahoma, Missouri and Arkansas state lines.

The sheriff said Newby had been living in the woods since his escape and was "extremely dirty."

He said they were able to arrest Newby thanks to help from Fire Chief, Randy Prins, and his two neighbors, Jim Martin and Jake Sumpter, who saw him and kept watch on him until deputies arrived.

Earlier this month, a Mayes County couple returned from out of town and found evidence Newby had moved into their home while they were away.

They said Newby was spotted on their property and also found evidence he had been inside their home and possibly stole a shotgun and even took a shower.
