Drillers Fall 6-0 To Hooks

Posted: Updated:

Tulsa Drillers lefthander Julio Urias suffered through his first rough outing of the season Tuesday night in Corpus Christi. The 18-year-old entered his third start of the season with a 0.00 ERA and had allowed only 6 hits while striking out 14 in 10.2 innings. In Tuesday's outing at Whataburger Field, Urias surrendered six hits and five runs in four innings as the Hooks defeated the Drillers 6-0.

Despite the loss, Tulsa concluded a successful road trip to Texas. The Drillers won two of three games in both Corpus Christi and San Antonio, compiling a 4-2 record on the trip.

Urias, who is ranked as one of the top prospects in Minor League Baseball, began strongly in Tuesday's loss. He retired the Hooks in order in each of the first two innings before running into trouble. Telvin Nash led off the third with a double and scored on a two-out hit by Tony Kemp.

In the bottom of the fourth, Urias surrendered consecutive one-out singles and a walk to load the bases. He struck out Nash and was within one strike of escaping the jam when Jio Mier cleared the bases with a three-run triple on a 0-2 pitch. Roberto Pena followed with a base hit to score Mier and give the Hooks a 5-0 lead.

Offensively, the Drillers were blanked by Corpus Christi starter Kent Emanuel. Emanuel allowed only four hits in five shutout innings before turning the game over to the bullpen.

Reliever Mitch Lambson kept the shutout in place, giving up only one hit in three scoreless innings of work, while Daniel Minor pitched the final inning to complete the shutout.

The Tulsa bullpen was also effective. Daniel Corcino walked three batters in 2/3 of an inning and was charged with one run in his Drillers debut, but Ryan Dennick, Mike Thomas and Blake Smith combined to work 3.1 scoreless innings.

Corey Seager, who was back at his usual shortstop position after playing third base in Monday's game, had his 9-game hitting streak snapped by going hitless in four at-bats. Despite the hitless outing, Seager's average is at a TL best .440.

DH Brian Burgamy had two hits to raise his season average to .320.

Tulsa will have a travel day on Wednesday before beginning a four-game home stand on Thursday with Northwest Arkansas. Deck McGuire (2-0, 1.38 ERA) will look for his third straight win for the Drillers, while the Naturals will send Jonathan Dziedzic (0-0, 2.35 ERA) to the mound. Starting time for the opener is scheduled for 7:05PM at ONEOK Field.
