Dick Faurot's Weather Blog: Cool Again Thursday, Chance Of Severe Storms Friday

Posted: Updated:

It was certainly cooler today, as you can see by the 24 hour temperature change map courtesy of the OK Mesonet. Notice also the max/min temperatures for today and keep in mind that the normal values for this time of year here in the Tulsa area are 74/51, respectively.

The clouds for most of the day and a NE wind together with the morning showers certainly contributed to the cool down.

Speaking of the morning showers, they were rather generous for some of us, as you can also see on the rainfall total map, also courtesy of the OK Mesonet.

With the front south of us and stalled out together with an E or NE wind for much of the day Thursday, it looks to be another relatively cool one with daytime highs only in the 60s after starting off near 50. There will also be another chance of showers and storms, mainly for the far southern counties of the state, into the morning hours and NE OK will be on the northern fringe of that activity.

However, there will still be at least a slight chance of some showers to start the day. That activity should be tapering off leaving us mostly dry by afternoon although the clouds are expected to hang around.

Friday looks very interesting with another round of showers/storms expected, but the forecast details are yet to be completely worked out as this will be a very dynamic weather situation with the potential for rapidly changing conditions.

Gusty southerly winds during the day will certainly warm things back up but the extent and timing of the moisture return is questionable as is the position of the dry line which is expected to move into the central parts of the state by late afternoon.

If the moisture is deep enough and is not intercepted by other showers/storms in TX and the dryline surges eastward as anticipated, then we will likely have severe storms. But, that is by no means certain, and as mentioned, there are a number of details yet to be worked out. Certainly advise keeping a close eye on the sky for late in the day Friday and into the overnight hours.

Right now, the Saturday/Sunday time frame looks very promising but another storm system will be headed our way by early next week with the potential for another round of showers/storms to start the work week. That should be followed by another decent cool down for this time of year anyway. The details of course are on our forecast page.

So, stay tuned and check back for updates.
