Osage SkyNews 6 HD Flies Over Gathering Park Drainage Work

Posted: Updated:
TULSA, Oklahoma -

The City of Tulsa is working on two drainage projects designed to reduce flooding near the Gathering Place. Construction of Tulsa's premier park pushed up the timeline for the project.

The work will also improve drainage for a neighborhood east and north of the new park.

There is an open trench and concrete box channel being built now on the north side of the property that drains to the river. It will double the capacity of a drain system that handles the Swan Creek neighborhood and should eliminate flooding on the north side of the Gathering Place.

It will drain out at about 27th Street.

The whole neighborhood drains south and west towards Gathering Place, and the area around the mansion has flooded several times.

The trail embankment (old Midland Valley rail line) creates a berm that holds water back and caused flooding on the east side of that.

The second project, which hasn't been dug out yet, is to run a line alongside the trail to collect some of that water and drain it out down about 31st Street.

Overall, the city says the added capacity will decrease flooding in the whole area from 24th Street to 31st Street, from Peoria to the river. It puts all of those areas back above the 100-year flood plain.

The city has been wanting to do both projects for a while; they were both in the master plan and were pushed up to coincide with work on Gathering Place so it could all be done at once.

It did include one house buyout about 26th and Cincinnati with a willing-to-sell owner. The property was needed to connect the lines.
