Former Creek Nation Second Chief Roger Barnett was sentenced to 33 months in federal prison Tuesday for embezzlement. During his sentencing in Tulsa, Roger Barnett, 53, of Bristow was also ordered to pay $211,880 in restitution to the Creek Nation.

U.S. Attorney Danny Williams for the Northern District of Oklahoma says in August 2014 a grand jury charged Barnett with embezzling tribal funds for his personal use from April 2013 to April 2014.

He pleaded guilty in October 2014.

“The defendant abused his position of trust,” said U.S. Attorney Danny Williams.

“Muscogee Nation officials reported the misuse of tribal funds after an internal audit. We will continue to work with tribal government and law enforcement partners to bring those who abuse the system to justice.”

Williams said after his release from prison, Roger Barnett will be banned for three years from gambling facilities and is required to attend gambling addiction counseling.
