Four Earthquakes Rumble Around Oklahoma

Four earthquakes over 3.0 in  magnitude were recorded around the state on Sunday.

The first two earthquakes struck near the town of Tonkawa, Okla., Sunday.

The first, a 3.3 magnitude quake, struck at approximately 10:20 a.m. Its epicenter was located 11 miles southeast of Tonkawa, 12 miles south southwest of Ponca City, and 30 miles north northwest of Stillwater. It was about two miles deep.

The second, a 3.0 magnitude quake, struck at approximately 1:57 p.m. Its epicenter was located in the same area as the first earthquake.

Later, after 9 p.m., two more earthquakes were recorded near Guthrie, in Logan County. Just after 9 p.m. a 3.1 magnitude quake was recorded four miles southwest of Guthrie at a depth of just over four miles. Then, at 9:52 p.m., a 3.7 magnitude quake struck in virtually the same area at a depth of three miles.   

There have been no reports of damage or injuries associated with the earthquakes.

According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), earthquakes with magnitudes ranging from 2.5 to 3.0 are generally the smallest ones felt by humans. Damage is more likely with quakes at magnitudes 4.0 and higher.
