If May of 2015 has seemed much rainier than normal, there's a good reason for it.

The May 1 to May 18 period this year has been the wettest in Oklahoma since 1921, according to Gary McManus, State Climatologist with the Oklahoma Mesonet.

McManus says the statewide average rainfall total for May stands at 7.15 inches, 4.43 inches above normal.

He says May of 2015, even though it's not over yet, is already the 15th wettest on record, dating back to 1895. Here are the 15 wettest Mays in Oklahoma history:

1957: 10.54"
1982: 10.38"
1943: 9.66"
1902: 9.14"
1908: 8.09"
1987: 7.93"
1935: 7.82"
1949: 7.60"
1955: 7.59"
1898: 7.54"
1929: 7.50"
1993: 7.42"
2001: 7.38"
1905: 7.35"
2015: 7.15"

McManus says May 2015 is also the wettest month the state has seen since June of 2007, which had a statewide average of 9.51".

He believes there's a chance this month may become the wettest month in state history. The current record is the 10.75" of rain in October 1941.
