Oklahoma is one of just eight states that does not require autism insurance coverage, meaning families in Oklahoma do not have access to health insurance plans that cover treatments geared towards kids on the spectrum.
Wednesday, families met with Autism Speaks to talk about getting coverage in Oklahoma.
“If you think about it, for the tax payer of Oklahoma, imagine all these kids whose parents are paying their health insurance premiums every month who can't get coverage and can't get treatment. What does that mean ten or 20 years down the road? For everyone in Oklahoma? Those kids are still going to be on the Autism Spectrum and they're going to need a lot more care," said Judith Ursitti with Autism Speaks.
Autism Speaks said new evidence shows the condition is treatable and that certain therapies can help kids learn and function better in the long run.
