Portions of Interstate 35 remain shut down following several rockslides Thursday. Loose rocks the from the Arbuckle Mountains have drivers diverted until the area is fixed.

Northbound I-35 traffic will remain diverted into the southbound lanes until the Oklahoma Department of Transportation is able to stabilize those rocks and engineers say that could be a few weeks.

Close to a dozen rock slides Thursday morning shutdown the interstate, backing up traffic for hours.

Oklahoma Department of Transportation now says, expect those lanes to be closed for several weeks while they make the repairs.

“There's rock that's loose and there's rock that appears to be possibly be loose so they want to take care of all of that before they open northbound traffic,” said Terri Angier, spokeswoman for Oklahoma Department of Transportation.

Until then some drivers are detouring around the closure taking them right by the famous Arbuckle Mountain Original Fried Pies giving them an unexpected boost in sales.

“They stop here to get gas and drinks so they can divert this way down 77, instead of 35,” said William Wiley, Arbuckle Mountain Original Fried Pies.

William Wiley, whose job is to make the pie filling, says the road block is forcing several pie makers to take the long way to work to avoid the back up.

Traffic that will only get worse as the holiday weekend approaches.

ODOT is working closely Colorado's Department of Transportation to find a solution for these unstable rocks.

“We've has some experience unfortunately recently with this, but in general rock slides isn't the big thing we deal with here,” Angier said.

ODOT believes they'll have in place on how they will stabilize these rocks and how long it will take by Wednesday.

While traffic is moving through the area, ODOT still suggests taking Highway 69 or 81 to avoid more congestion.
