Fireworks Safety: Adult Snappers Sold Legally This Year

Posted: Updated:
TULSA, Oklahoma -

People have been buying Adult Snappers illegally for years, but this year is the first time they'll be sold everywhere.

While they seem innocent enough, they pack a punch.

They look like fuseless firecrackers, but they're classified as a novelty.

The Snappers comes packed in sawdust ready to pour out and throw, and just like any firework or novelty item you handle, they should be used with caution.

"Up until this year, what was classified as "Adult Snappers" were illegal," said Big Blast Fireworks representative Sherry Barbour.

Barbour says up until recent manufacturer adjustments, there were reports that Adult Snappers could go off in the packaging when dropped or mishandled.

"At one time, before they were certified as legal, you could drop a box of them and they might explode, now not explode like blow the place up, but they would make more than just a little crackle," she explained.

But even now, with some of the packaging changed, Barbour says these little "snaps" aren't for everyone just like the name implies.

"They're nothing I would give my kids to play with. These are something the big boys like to shoot around here," she said.

Holly Brown and her family have been coming to Big Blast Fireworks for five years, and say's when it comes to any kind of fireworks her family makes sure to play it safe.

"We make sure none of them keep them in their hands, we make sure to keep a water hose around and we make sure you know that only three at a time in a line are going,” explained Brown. “That's how we keep them safe because I know they'll burn their hand real easy."

Those safety precautions are no different when dealing with "Snappers" especially since Barbour says they're flying off the shelves.

“For the last three years, we've been like, ‘I'm sorry, we can't get them,’ but this year when they come up, all of our Big Blast locations currently have stock. But, when people find out that we have them, they're going to go pretty quick."

If your kids were hoping to try these out, stands still sell the less powerful snaps that are considered age appropriate.
