INOLA, Oklahoma -

The city of Inola had to shut off the water to the entire town Monday to do some water line repairs which left residents without water for about an hour.

About 2,000 people were without water as crews replaced about 20 feet of water line.

Some of the lines are almost 60 years old and falling apart, and with multiple leaks the fix won’t be permanent and more work is expected in the future.

Inola resident Shirley Reed said she started preparing as soon as she heard the water would be shut off.

"We've got all of our errands, our buckets filled and some plastic pitchers in our kitchen filled with water, you know, so we are all set for this short time period shut off," Reed said.

She said the town's water has been shut off quite a few times over the past few years.

Inola Mayor Larry Grigg said going from drought conditions to recent heavy rains has put pressure on the waterlines.

"Just like a lot of small towns that have been around a long time our infrastructure is kinda deteriorating and we want to replace it," he said.

Grigg also said a recent valve problem sent water into the lines too fast and put even more added pressure on the already failing lines.

While the water was shut off, most area restaurants had to shut down.

In a town with little money to get the water lines fixed, it's a hassle, but one business and residents have gotten used to.

The mayor said city leaders have been talking about what they can do to keep the system from failing.

They plan to apply for grants to help replace the old lines over time, but it's not clear how soon that will happen.
