The Red Cross offers some life saving reminders as a heat wave continues to bake northeast Oklahoma.

First, the Red Cross says slow down, take frequent breaks and drink plenty of water, even if you are not thirsty and wear loose-fitting and lightweight clothing.

“High temperatures, humidity and hot, indoor environments can quickly cause heat-related emergencies,” said Ken Garcia, American Red Cross Serving Oklahoma spokesperson.

“Excessive heat can lead to sunburn, heat cramps, heat exhaustion and heat stroke.”
Garcia other important tips include if working outdoors, take plenty of breaks and never leave children or pets alone in vehicles.  And if possible, bring pets indoors.  If not, make sure pets have plenty of water and a shady place to rest.

In addition, the Red Cross recommends checking on family, friends and neighbors who may have may not have air conditioning.
