TULSA, Oklahoma -

The summer sun is causing some issues across much of eastern Oklahoma as EMSA has responded to seven heat-related calls Tuesday.

A spokesperson said, of those seven, three patients were taken to hospitals - one in serious condition.

EMSA said taking precaution early is key to preventing heat-related illness and gave several tips including:

  • Pre-hydration – drinking plenty of water or electrolyte replacement drinks hours prior to and during long exposure to heat.
  • Wear light-colored, loose-fitting clothing and a wide-brimmed hat if working outdoors
  • No alcohol or caffeine
  • Take frequent breaks indoors or in the shade.
  • If you don’t have air condition, find a cooling station or public space during the day.
  • Don’t limit your air condition.
  • Use the buddy system if working outdoors and check on elderly neighbors.
  • Always take a charged cell phone with you, even if outdoors for a short amount of time, so you can call 911.

According to a news release, there are also several cooling stations that can be taken advantage of for those in need at The Salvation Army Center of Hope, Tulsa County Social Services Cooling Station, Dennis R. Neill Equality Center, John 3:16 Mission and at Senior Nutrition sites throughout the Tulsa area.

For more information on locations and hours, you can dial 211 for help.
