Strangers Help Tulsa Woman In Need Of Air Conditioning

It’s tough when your air condition breaks this time of year, and even tougher if you can’t afford to fix it.

One woman News On 6 spoke with was suffering through the heat with a broken AC, but because of the kindness of strangers, she’s much cooler now.

Stacy King was just one of many who emailed us saying they didn't have air conditioning, but now she's feeling the chill in her home.

"My life has changed for the better because I have never seen such an outpouring of generosity, and, gosh, just every little thing makes me cry these days," she said.

When we first spoke to King, the average temperature in her home was 90 degrees.

Hours after our story about her broken AC aired, help arrived, then more help came the next morning, and the generosity continues.

"I've been helped before in my life, but this just tops the cake. This is something else. It makes me cry," said King.

She hopes others will be able to experience the same generosity.

"I don't want to get it all, I want to spread the wealth and I hope that can happen for other people cause I know I'm not the only one," she said.

Places like Catholic Charities can help, according to Todd Slezak.

"Any type of donations would be greatly appreciated," he said.

When window AC units and fans are donated there they are given to people in need, but so far Catholic Charities doesn’t have anything to give - and with 15 to 20 requests for AC units a month they could use more donations.

"It's kinda a hit and a miss, and if we have them that's great, but at times, sometimes we even get air conditioning units that aren't working, so, which really doesn't do us or the client any justice," he said.

For now, Catholic Charities will continue to appeal to the public's generosity.

While window units are helpful, what a lot of people need is money to repair their AC. We didn’t find an agency to help with that, but many repair companies do offer coupons.
