Yukon Police Officer Rescues Child Trapped Inside Car

A Yukon police officer comes to the rescue Monday, smashing open a car window to save a trapped toddler.

His mother had remote started the car, but then it locked with the keys and the two year old inside.

The mother of two says those 20 minutes that passed with her son locked in the car were the most terrifying minutes of her life. She thanks a Yukon police officer’s extreme measures for saving her son's life.

Officer Chris Brugh and Rylan are nearly inseparable now. Friends since Monday, the two met during a rescue, Rylan's rescue.

Brittany Joyce, Rylan’s mother, bought the car three years ago and has loaded her kids in the same way every time; repeating that motion on Monday after grocery shopping at Target.

“I remote started my car and when you do that it locks the car down, so then I unlocked the car. I had my buggy, I put Rylan in his car [seat] and buckled him in,” said Joyce.

Joyce then loaded the bags into the car and shut the door.

“About this point I realized my keys were locked in the car and the whole car locked down,” said Joyce.

A gut wrenching panic set in for this mother. Joyce tried finding help in the parking lot before calling police. All the while the car still on with the air conditioning running.

“I basically stood right by him and told him that mommy's here and you're going to be ok,” said Joyce.

But just as Brugh arrived, the automatic start timed out, turning off the AC. Several failed attempts to unlock the door forced Brugh to break out a window.

“I actually took my belt off and handed it to one of our captains that was there and crawled in through the window and got him out and then I crawled all the way to the back cargo area to get her keys out,” said Brugh.

“I just, I don't know how you thank someone enough for saving your kid's life,” said Joyce.

As a way to say thank you, Rylan and his mom took Brugh a cookie and a picture he colored.
