A gunfight plays out in rural Pottawatomie County and all while a 5-year-old boy is asleep on the couch.

A series of 911 calls started coming in about 3:30 a.m. on Thursday.

“My son was standing in his driveway shooting somebody…I don’t know what the **** is going on. He said, ‘Mom, call 911.’”

The woman's son is Keith Forbis. He and his wife, Cara, live at the residence where the shootings took place. Forbis’s mother lives in a travel trailer next door and heard gunshots. Moments later, Forbis calls 911.

“I need…someone shot me.”

“OK. Where are you at?”

“Help me. Help…I’m shot, and my wife is shot. My wife was shot in the stomach. I’m shot in the ribs.”

Investigators say several shots were fired, but they don't know who fired the first shot.

“Who was it that you were shooting at?”

“Rhett Ragland,” Forbis said.

Detectives say several people were gathered at the home, but what led to a gunfight is unclear. It started inside the house where a 5-year-old boy was asleep on the couch.

“They’d been hanging out around midnight with a couple of other people,” Pottawatomie County Sheriff Travis Palmer said. “The other couple of people took off about 2:30, and we received the call at 3:30.”

Deputies found Ragland about 80 yards away from the house. He was shot in the knee and armed with a gun, but detectives say he is not doing a lot of talking.

Right now, authorities are trying to figure out what led up to the shootings, but so far, all they have to go on is the 911 call Forbis made.

“We’re not able to talk to them right now because of their conditions,” Palmer said.

Forbis is in fair condition. His wife Cara is in critical condition, and Ragland is listed in good condition.
