An Oklahoma City Zoo keeper is recovering after she was stung by a cownose stingray Wednesday morning.
According to the Oklahoma City Zoo, at about 8:40 a.m., a zoo keeper was stung by a cownose stingray at Stingray Bay during a routine animal care procedure where the animal was required to be out of the water.
Zoo staff responded and followed safety protocols, according to Zoo officials. EMSA also responded to the zoo as a precaution. The employee was transported to a medical facility to be monitored.
The incident occurred before the zoo opened for the day. Officials stressed that the incident is not something that could happen to a guest during contact and feeding while the stingrays are in the pool. The zoo will review the safety protocols for this procedure.
Stingray Bay will remain open during regular business hours.
