Muscogee Principal Chief George Tiger To Seek Re-Election

Principal Chief George Tiger of the Muscogee (Creek) Nation, who was the subject of an impeachment petition drive, has officially announced he is seeking re-election for a second term.

Tiger said in a news release Monday that the tribe has begun building a new hospital, a new clinic and is the first tribe to own and operate its on dialysis center while also expanding its gaming operations and other businesses.

“What we’ve done with our healthcare program is to adopt and then rapidly implement a plan to increase health services directly to our people,” Tiger said.

“We put our money where our mouth is on this one, building new facilities and adding new services to take care of our people. When we assumed operations of the hospital in Okmulgee, we did it without using tribal funds and paid off the hospital’s debt in just a year and a half.”

A petition to impeach Tiger was circulated starting in March after it was revealed he signed a contract in 2009 with a developer of a Broken Arrow casino project that would have competed with the Creek Nation's Tulsa casino, but it fell short of the signatures needed.

Tiger said he did nothing wrong because he signed the contract before he became chief.

On March 19, the Muscogee tribal council approved a vote of "no confidence" in Tiger.
