TU Getting Ready For Option-Heavy Lobos

It used to be the norm in college football, but now what TU will face at New Mexico is more of a novelty.

It's a different test for The Golden Hurricane this week. The Lobos option attack is an offense players say they're unfamiliar facing.

Defensive Tackle Derrick Luetjen said, "You know I really don't think we have. I may be a little bit different of a defensive lineman, as you usually see they like to rush the quarterback and get those sacks. Honestly, I like doing run blocks. Beating a double team is more satisfying to me sometimes."

Coach Philip Montgomery said it was hard to get much of a read on the Lobos after they defeated an over matched Mississippi Valley team. But what they can do is worry about themselves.

"We got three days to get a whole new scheme, game plan in, and it's not anything similar to what you just faced. So, defensively we've got to come in and create a couple turnovers. Offensively, it just makes you more disciplined about what we're doing," he said.

But any new game plan to win on the road will be welcomed for the Golden Hurricane; that's because Tulsa didn't win a game on the road last year.

So Montgomery, now newly adjusted to not calling plays in the box but on the sideline, also has a game plan to win on the road.

"Yeah, it was different, but it was enjoyable. You know the biggest thing for me was getting used to being on the sideline again and feeling the energy. Little bit of an adjustment, but obviously it worked out alright," he said.

At the very least, TU's defense will be physically prepared after facing 96 plays from FAU on Saturday.
