One man is dead and the Pond Creek police chief is in the hospital after a Sunday morning altercation, the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation reported.

About 6 a.m., homeowners in the 18500 block of US Highway 81 in Pond Creek called 911 about a man trying to break into their home.

Clifford Butler Jr., 67, of McAlester, was acting erratically when Pond Creek police Chief Tim Barwick, a Grant County deputy and two Medford police officers arrived to talk to him, OSBI reported.

Barwick was shot at least once by the suspect while officers were trying to subdue Butler, OSBI said.

The Grant County deputy fatally shot Butler, and Barwick was taken to an Enid hospital.

OSBI will investigate the fatal, officer-involved shooting and give its findings to the district attorney's office in Grant County.

The agency will not release the name of the deputy unless he is arrested or charged with a crime, OSBI said.
