Students at Riverfield Country Day School are learning about hydroponics. The kids are 3, 4 and 5 years old, and they are learning about growing plants without dirt.

They're growing lettuce and some herbs.

Aubrey Flowers is their teacher. She's said they're all learning about hydroponics together.

"They're getting hands-on experience that is opened ended," Flowers said.

As the plants grow, they harvest a little for themselves and their classmates.

Kelly Grogg from Grogg's Green Barn is providing expertise. He's brought some seeds so they can plant some more, and he's brought little containers like peat pots to put the seeds in so they'll germinate.

Once the seeds are in, they are - enthusiastically - watered. There's no such thing as too much water on the seeds, Grogg said.

Once they begin to grow, they are transferred to the hydroponic table. The kids can see the plants above and the roots below, and begin to learn about nutrients in the water feeding the plant and helping it grow.
I think what they like most is harvesting or cutting it.

Then they wash it so they can taste it. Next stop, Food Network.
