As speculation continues to swirl around Capitol Hill of who will fill the speaker of the House vacancy, U.S. Rep. Steve Russell stopped by News 9 to weigh in.

Russell didn't have any predictions about who specifically he thought would fill the opening, but he believes who ever does fill the vacancy must be able to handle the issues America is facing today.

Various reports say Congressman Paul Ryan, R-Wisconsin, has privately told several House members he's considering running for speaker, but Russell questions the speculation following a conversation the two had Friday.

“Paul Ryan has stated a few times here in this week he's not interested in the job. He appreciates  people reaching out to him. I talked to him in conference yesterday morning and he was very much looking forward to being in a deer stand this week and I can't say I blame him,” Russell said.

Ryan ran as Mitt Romney's vice president running mate back in 2012.

Some think Ryan could bridge the gap between tea party-linked conservatives and more established Republicans.

Another name we discussed is U.S. Rep. Tom Cole from Oklahoma's 4th District.

Russell said Cole knows how to do the job and is conservative when spending.
