A long-time well-loved custodian at the Canadian County Commissioners’ Office was unexpectedly let go two weeks ago. The county says the move was designed to save taxpayer money.

Trey Brooks, 42, was one of three maintenance employees let go on October 1.

Brooks has special needs, yet sources told News 9 he’s been a Stalwart County custodian for more than 16 years. His mother Suzy said she was thinking about taking legal action against the County Commissioners’ Office, but instead, something really neat happened Friday.

Canadian County Sheriff Randall Edwards hired Trey Brooks to be a custodian for the Sheriff’s Office.

Brooks said it’s a dream come true. “Yes I do have some learning disabilities; I’m slow at some things, but you what?  I’m not afraid to work. I want to work.”

Canadian County Undersheriff Chris West said his boss hired Brooks because he not only has a strong work ethic, but it was the right thing to do. “We’re all a family, or at least we’re supposed to be.”

West said Trey will basically fulfill the same role he has done so well for the past 16 years. He’ll get paid the same, and receive the same health and retirement benefits.

Trey’s mom said it’s a prayer that has been answered in a big way. “I’m just, I can’t believe it,” she said with tear-filled eyes Friday afternoon.
